What is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture is an effective form of medical treatment that has evolved in a complete holistic health care system. Acupuncture including Chinese medicine promotes natural healing. It can enhance recuperative power and immunity, support physical and emotional health and improve overall function and well being. It is a safe, painless and effective way to treat a wide variety of medical conditions. Acupuncture can be used to treat medical problems with no side effects on the patient’s current medical treatment regimens.
An acupuncturist will insert very fine sterile needles at specific acu-points on the body to affect the body’s Qi. The goal of a Chinese medicine practitioner in treatment is to balance the body and restore the natural flow of Qi.
What is Qi?
At the core of Chinese medicine is philosophy of Qi (pronounced “Chee”) or Life Energy. I see Qi similar to the body’s metabolism since it emanates from the body and protects it from illness, pain, and disease. A person’s health is influenced by the quality, quantity and balance of Qi. Qi energy flows through the body in meridians and an obstruction of Qi is like a dam. When the flow of Qi is disrupted it can be detrimental to the person’s health, cutting off vital nourishment to the body, organs and glands. Prolonged and excessive blockages of Qi can be detrimental to a person’s general health. Among the major factors that influence Qi flow and can result in blockages include: physical and emotional stress, lack of exercise, overexertion, seasonal changes, diet, and physical trauma/accidents.
